The Emir of Biu, His Royal Highness Alhaji Dr Mustapha Umar Aliyu Mustapha II, has conferred the traditional title of Sarkin Yakin Biu (Warrior of Biu) on retired Major General Abdulmalik Bulama Biu.
The Emir, while receiving family and friends of the new titleholder on Thursday, said the decision followed General Bulama’s distinguished military service and role in counter-insurgency operations in the Northeast.
He noted that the retired officer rose through the ranks to become a major general and served as General Officer Commanding, 7 Division, at the height of the Boko Haram insurgency.
“He is a gallant soldier with humility and commitment to his people. Despite his retirement, we will not allow him to sit idle. That is why the Biu Emirate has appointed him Sarkin Yakin Biu. We hope he will bring his military experience to the service of Biu, Borno State, and Nigeria”.
The thanksgiving delegation was led by Prof. Lawal Bala Buratai, Vice Chancellor of the Nigerian Army University, Biu, who commended the Emir and council for the choice, describing it as a source of pride for the emirate.
Other members of the delegation included Brigadier General Abdullahi Dadan-Garba, Director General of the TY Buratai Institute for War and Peace; Alhaji Shuaibu Warawa, who represented APC Deputy National Chairman, Alhaji Ali Bukar Dalori; Muhammad Bulama Saidu, former PRO of the DPR; Ibrahim Dahiru Danfulani, Sadaukin Betara Biu; Chairman of the TY Buratai Humanity Care Foundation, Engr Jibrin Abdulmalik Bulama; and Hon Idris Abdulmalik Bulama, alongside clerics, support groups and well-wishers.
The Emir announced that the formal turbaning ceremony for Sarkin Yakin will hold on October 11, 2025.
