President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sacked the nation’s Service Chiefs, days after reports of alleged coup plot surfaced within the military hierarchy, in what observers see as part of efforts to reinforce loyalty and strengthen national security.
A statement issued on Friday by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Mr. Sunday Dare, announced the appointment of new Service Chiefs to take charge of the Armed Forces.
General Olufemi Oluyede has been named the new Chief of Defence Staff, replacing General Christopher Musa. Major-General W. Shaibu is the new Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke becomes the Chief of Air Staff, while Rear Admiral I. Abbas takes over as Chief of Naval Staff.
Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye retains his position as Chief of Defence Intelligence.
President Tinubu expressed appreciation to the outgoing Service Chiefs for their “patriotic service and dedicated leadership” and urged the new appointees to justify the confidence reposed in them.
He charged them to demonstrate professionalism, discipline, and unity in safeguarding the nation’s territorial integrity and defending its democratic institutions.
“All appointments take immediate effect,” the statement added.
