The Global Peace Foundation Nigeria has called on journalists across the country to embrace peace reportage as a vital tool for promoting national transformation and unity.

The Country Director of the Global Peace Foundation Nigeria, Rev. Joseph John Hayab, made the call on Wednesday while delivering a paper titled “Peace Reportage for National Transformation” at a one-day capacity building workshop on peace reporting, organised by the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kaduna Council.

According to the him, the media holds a powerful responsibility in shaping public perception and driving positive change in society.

He added that peace journalism should go beyond reporting conflict to highlighting reconciliation efforts, community healing, and stories that inspire national cohesion.

“The pursuit of peace is more critical than ever. Peace reportage explores the multifaceted aspects of peacebuilding, conflict resolution, and reconciliation, providing insights and narratives that can inspire and foster societal change”.

He noted that through balanced reporting, journalists can encourage dialogue among diverse groups, promote understanding, and amplify the voices of marginalized communities. It emphasized that constructive storytelling can help citizens focus on solutions rather than divisions.

Citing examples from Rwanda’s post-genocide recovery and South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), the Foundation said both countries benefited greatly from peace-oriented media coverage that focused on unity, healing, and democratic renewal.

“When the media focuses on community healing and reconciliation, it empowers societies to move forward. That is the kind of journalism our nation needs, stories that build hope rather than deepen division”.

The Country Director further recommended that media organizations invest in training journalists in the principles of peace journalism to strengthen ethical reporting and responsible communication.

Hayab called for stronger collaboration between the media, civil society, and government agencies, while urging the establishment of dedicated media segments for peacebuilding and conflict resolution. It suggested the creation of awards and funding opportunities for outlets that prioritize peace-driven narratives.

“At the Global Peace Foundation, we believe that we are one family under God. The information we share among ourselves should unite us, not divide us”.

Global Peace Foundation concluded that peace reportage is essential for building trust, reconciliation, and development, urging journalists to see themselves as key partners in Nigeria’s journey toward a more peaceful and equitable society.
