The Northern Youth for Peace and Progress has asked Senate President Godswill Akpabio to remove Senator Shehu Umar Buba as Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence over alleged links to banditry in Zamfara State.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday in Kaduna, the group’s coordinator, Comrade Hassan Sadau, said Senator Buba should be relieved of the sensitive position and handed over to the Senate Ethics Committee for investigation.

Sadau alleged that a leaked video showed cash and motorcycles, believed to be used by bandits, being moved from the senator’s residence, escorted by a cleric accused of ties to armed groups. He also accused the lawmaker of tacitly supporting the operations of notorious bandit leaders, including Bello Turji and Adamu Aliero.

According to him, the senator’s continued leadership of the committee has eroded public trust and emboldened bandits, worsening insecurity in Zamfara and other parts of the North.

“Relieving him of this sensitive position will allow the Senate to conduct a fair investigation without bias and restore the confidence of victims of kidnappings and banditry,” he said.

The group recalled that several petitions had previously been submitted against Senator Buba without response, saying decisive action is now needed to safeguard the integrity of the National Assembly.
