The Convener of the Northern Stakeholders Initiative, Yerima Usman Shettima, has urged Nigerians to hold on to hope and unity as the country marked its 65th Independence anniversary.
Speaking at a celebration in Kaduna organized by Bikers Association in collaboration with Capacity Movement, Shettima said Nigeria’s survival despite numerous challenges was proof that the nation still has a future.
“The fact that we remain as a country is worth celebrating. Even in the darkest of times, I see light and Nigerians see it too. No matter how difficult, there is hope at the end of the day,” he said.
Shettima noted that insecurity and economic difficulties had taken their toll on citizens but insisted that stability was gradually returning.
He further said Independence anniversaries should not only remind Nigerians of the sacrifices of their founding fathers but also serve as a call for peace, resilience, and faith in the nation.
“Sixty-five years is no small journey. America has celebrated more than 200 years, and we will get there. Nigerians must remain peaceful and support government to deliver,” he added.
He however, stressed that unity and patience are the pillars that will sustain the country.
On the calls by the Capacity Movement for him to contest the Kaduna Central senatorial seat in 2027, Shettima said consultations were ongoing.
“I have heard their call. With time, I will respond accordingly. Hopefully, Nigerians will know my position when the time comes,” he said.
On his part, the national President of the Capacity Movement, Shehu Sani Sado, said the group is projecting Shettima because he embodies the qualities needed for credible leadership.
Sado said the Independence Day event was deliberate, aimed at reminding youths of the sacrifices of Nigeria’s founding fathers while igniting hope for the future.
“We are the ones to build Nigeria. Nobody will come from outside to do it for us. That is why we celebrate,” he said.
