In 1993, two brothers from a humble family background in Kaduna, Timothy and Matthew, left home for Lagos in search of a better life, unaware that the decision would eventually change the course of their lives in different ways.
The brothers, who had grown up witnessing the daily struggles of their family, believed that Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub, could offer them opportunities that were scarce at home. With hope in their hearts and little money in their pockets, they embarked on the journey to the bustling city.
However, life in Lagos proved far more difficult than they had imagined.
The two brothers spent several days moving from one place to another in search of opportunities. Under the scorching sun, they boarded buses across the city, knocking on doors and seeking employment, but were repeatedly met with rejection. Survival became increasingly difficult, and even finding food to eat was sometimes a challenge.
After enduring the hardship for some time, Timothy, the elder brother, became discouraged by the difficult conditions.
Unable to cope with the uncertainty and frustration, he decided to abandon the pursuit and return home to Kaduna.
“I can’t continue like this,” he reportedly said before leaving Lagos.
But Matthew chose a different path.
Despite the hardship and uncertainty, the younger brother refused to return home. Instead, he resolved to remain in Lagos and continue pursuing opportunities until his situation changed.
According to him, returning home without achieving his goal was not an option.
“It is either Lagos makes me or kills me,” he said, expressing his determination to succeed.
Matthew endured the difficult conditions and continued to improve himself while searching for opportunities. Years passed with both struggles and small achievements, but he remained persistent in his pursuit of a better life.
His perseverance eventually paid off when he secured employment with Kabo Air as a cabin crew member, a development that marked a turning point in his life.
The opportunity opened new doors for him and gradually changed his fortunes.
Today, Matthew is a successful and wealthy man living in the United States of America, enjoying the rewards of years of determination and resilience.
Ironically, Timothy, who had earlier abandoned the struggle and returned home, now depends largely on his younger brother for survival.
Observers say the story of the two brothers highlights the importance of perseverance and self-belief in achieving success.
According to them, the difference between the two brothers was not background, luck or talent, but persistence.
They note that success often comes to those who are willing to endure hardship, grow through challenges and remain committed to their goals even when circumstances appear discouraging.
