A housewife, Hadiza Abdullahi, has asked a Shari’a Court sitting in Magajin Gari, Kaduna, to dissolve her 35-year marriage to Isa Usman over what she described as lack of love.

Abdullahi, through her lawyer, Abubakar Suleiman, told the court that she was no longer in love with her husband and could no longer continue with the marriage.

She therefore prayed the court to dissolve the marriage through Khul’i, a form of divorce under Islamic law in which a woman seeks release from marriage by returning the dowry paid by her husband.

Suleiman told the court that his client had been married to Usman for 35 years and that N1,000 was paid as her dowry.

He said Abdullahi was ready to return the dowry to her husband to secure her freedom from the marriage.

However, counsel to the defendant, I.T. Sanusi, told the court that his client could not remember the exact amount paid as dowry but was certain that it was more than N1,000.

Sanusi also told the court that his client was seeking payment of N300,000.

“I pray the court to give us time to present the exact amount that was paid as the complainant’s dowry and reasons why Usman should be paid N300,000,” he said.

The judge, Malam Yakubu Abdullahi, adjourned the case until September 2 for the complainant to present evidence to enable the court ascertain the exact amount paid as dowry.
