Defending champions Delta All-Stars International began their title defence on a winning note on Thursday, defeating Ex-Invisible Leopard All-Stars 1-0 in the opening match of the fourth Ofugara Peace and Unity Football Tournament.
The match was played at the Okotogbo Primary School Football Pitch in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State.
The closely contested encounter was decided in the second half after Delta All-Stars International found the back of the net and held on to their lead until the final whistle despite a spirited response from Ex-Invisible Leopard All-Stars.
The 2026 edition of the tournament has been expanded to 32 veteran All-Stars clubs drawn from the three senatorial districts of Delta State, bringing together former professional and grassroots footballers.
The tournament is aimed at promoting peace, unity, friendship and community development through football.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, a member of the Ofugara Give Back Initiative Board, Mrs Antoinette Ofugara Obiuwevbi, described the tournament as more than a football competition, saying it provides an opportunity for former players to remain active and contribute to society.
She urged the participating players to give their best and uphold the spirit of sportsmanship, while calling for continued support to ensure the sustainability of the tournament.
Obiuwevbi also commended the Chairman of the Ofugara Foundation, Mr Silva Ofugara, for his commitment to humanitarian causes and contributions to society.
She appreciated the Delta State Government for creating an enabling environment for sports to thrive and develop, noting that such support was important for sports development and talent discovery.
Several former football stars are taking part in the tournament, with the veteran players expected to showcase their experience and tactical awareness as the competition progresses.
The organisers have offered a N10 million grand prize for the winner, with the 32 participating teams battling for the trophy and prize money.
Beyond the competition, the tournament is expected to strengthen relationships among former footballers and communities across the state while promoting its message of peace and unity.
Delta All-Stars International will now look to build on their opening victory as the tournament progresses, while Ex-Invisible Leopard All-Stars will seek to bounce back in their next fixture.
