Kaduna: GPD Sensitises Traditional Leaders, Women, Other Stakeholders On VAPP Law

As part of its activities to curb Sexual and Gender Based-Violence (SGBV), a non-governmental organization (NGO), Global Peace Development (GPD) with support from International Alert has sensitised over 200 critical stakeholders in Kaduna on Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law.

The executive director, GPD, Ebruke Onajite Esike, during the sensitization exercise yesterday in Kaduna called for increased in awareness on VAPP Law, saying that residents of the State are still ignorant of VAPP.

He urged residents of the Kaduna to familiarize themselves with the content of VAPP Law and use it to curb SGBV.

According to him, working collaboratively and increasing awareness can stimulate support and ensure justice is served.

“The commitment of critical stakeholders, including religious and traditional leaders is vital in addressing inequality, human rights violations, SGBV, insecurity, and poverty. By working collaboratively and increasing awareness can stimulate support and ensure justice is served transparently”.

He however, said that prevalence of gender-based violence, harmful cultural practices, and the lack accountability for perpetrators have continued to dehumanize individuals and hinder access to justice.

He further said that the objectives of the programme was to increase participants knowledge on VAPP Law and improving access to justice for vulnerable populations.

The vice chairperson, International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Kaduna State branch, Julie Ariahu stressed the need for continuous sensitization on VAPP Law in the State.

The village head of Tudun Wada Kudansa and Maraban Rido, Joseph Sauri Garba commended GPD and International Alert for bringing the awareness to Chikun and Jema’a LGA.

The participants resolved that, there is need to take VAPP Law awareness to schools, worship places and market places in order to tackle the menace.
