NAN Condemns Fake News By Sahara Reporters Regarding Kaduna State Debt Profile

The Northern Awareness Network (NAN) vehemently condemns the recent publication by Sahara Reporters alleging that the Kaduna State government has borrowed N36 billion in the past six months.

This unfounded claim has been dismissed by the Kaduna State government as false and misleading, emphasizing the vital role of accuracy in reporting, especially on matters that directly impact public trust and governance.

In a time when our nation faces numerous economic and social challenges, it is imperative that the media operates with responsible journalism.

NAN in a statement issued by its Chairman Salihu Suleiman expressed disappointment over Sahara Reporters for failing to corroborate facts or seek clarification before disseminating such sensationalized information.

This breach of journalistic integrity not only misleads the public but also constitutes what can be aptly termed “digital terrorism,” undermining the diligent efforts of the current administration and diverting attention from ongoing investigations into financial mismanagement inherited from the previous administration.

“The Kaduna State government has reiterated that, rather than incurring new debts, it is confronting a substantial inherited debt burden exacerbated by the dramatic devaluation of the Naira. Exchange rates have surged from ₦415-₦480 to over ₦1,600 to the dollar, causing the cost of servicing past debts to effectively triple in local currency. This reality affects not only the Kaduna State government but resonates across the nation, underscoring the urgent need for factual reporting”.

NAN stands in unwavering solidarity with the Kaduna State government and calls on all media outlets, particularly those with extensive readership like Sahara Reporters, to uphold the highest standards of accuracy, fairness, and responsibility in their reporting.

“Misinformation can skew public opinion and pose significant obstacles to governmental operations aimed at serving the citizens effectively.

“As committed stakeholders in the progress of Northern Nigeria, we implore all media organizations to focus on constructive narratives that foster national discourse rather than participating in sensationalism driven by external interests”.

“The priorities of our youth and communities must remain at the forefront of our collective efforts, as we strive to hold our leadership accountable in a transparent and informed manner”.
