NAN Backs Matawalle’s Response To Amaechi

Northern Awareness Network (NAN) has thrown their weight behind the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle on his response  to Rotimi Amaechi, saying it was not only justifiable but essential for safeguarding Nigeria’s future.

The group noted that the recent criticisms leveled against Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Muhammed Matawalle, for his response to Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, highlight a crucial debate surrounding the balance between freedom of speech and the maintenance of national security and political stability.

In a statement on Sunday by the Chairman of NAN, Salihu Sulaiman said “Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze’s condemnation of Minister Matawalle’s actions as ‘unwarranted intimidation” fails to consider the broader context and potential consequences of Amaechi’s statements.

“The core of the controversy lies in the differing interpretations of Amaechi’s comments and Matawalle’s subsequent response”.

Chief Eze frames Matawalle’s actions as an instance of undue intimidation, focusing narrowly on the perceived threat to Amaechi’s freedom of speech. However, this perspective overlooks the potential implications of Amaechi’s words.

“His comments, as interpreted by the government, arguably crossed the line into potentially inflammatory rhetoric, capable of undermining national unity and jeopardizing public order. In a democracy, freedom of speech is not absolute; it is inherently limited when it incites violence, hatred, or poses a clear and present danger to national security.

“The government has a responsibility to address such rhetoric proactively, before it can escalate into widespread unrest. Minister Matawalle’s response, therefore, should be understood not as an attack on free speech, but as a necessary assertion of the government’s authority to maintain order and prevent potential chaos”.

“Furthermore, Chief Eze’s criticism that Matawalle is focusing on internal political matters instead of national security ignores the inextricable link between the two.

“Political stability is the bedrock of national security. An atmosphere of political uncertainty, fueled by divisive rhetoric and inflammatory statements from prominent figures, directly contributes to insecurity.

“Such rhetoric can create an environment of fear and distrust, potentially leading to social unrest and even violence. Therefore, addressing potentially destabilizing political statements is not a distraction from security concerns but a critical element in maintaining them.

“Minister Matawalle’s actions can be viewed as proactive measures to prevent the escalation of political tensions into significant security threats, thus preemptively addressing a potential source of instability”.

“In conclusion, the NAN believes that Chief Eze’s criticism of Minister Matawalle is fundamentally misplaced and misinformed.

“The condemnation lacks crucial context and oversimplifies a complex situation with significant potential consequences. Minister Matawalle’s response should be seen not as an act of intimidation, but as a necessary assertion of governmental authority to maintain political stability and national security.

“Strong leadership necessitates decisive action, especially when dealing with issues that threaten national unity and security. A government that fails to act decisively risks emboldening those who seek to undermine its authority.

“The NAN unequivocally supports Minister Matawalle and his commitment to upholding the rule of law and safeguarding Nigeria’s future. His actions demonstrate the necessary firmness required to protect the nation from the dangers of unchecked inflammatory rhetoric and its potential for destabilization”.
