The President of the United Church of Christ in Nigeria (HEKAN), Rev. Dr. Amos G. Kiri, has called on the Federal and State Governments to take firmer and more decisive action to address Nigeria’s worsening security situation, urging Nigerians to remain vigilant and security-conscious.
Rev. Kiri made the call in his 2025 message delivered on Thursday, where he stressed that the foremost responsibility of any democratic government is the protection of lives and property, warning that persistent insecurity poses a serious threat to national peace, unity and development.
The cleric expressed deep concern over the escalation of banditry and terrorist attacks in several parts of the country, noting that communities, schools and places of worship have increasingly become targets of violent assaults.
According to him, the impunity with which criminals operate has left many Nigerians living in fear and uncertainty, adding that no meaningful economic growth or social stability can be achieved in an atmosphere of insecurity.
Rev. Kiri urged governments at all levels to strengthen intelligence gathering, deploy more security personnel to vulnerable areas and ensure that security operatives are adequately equipped to confront emerging threats.
While demanding accountability from government, the HEKAN President also appealed to citizens to take personal and collective responsibility for their safety by remaining alert and proactive in their communities.
He encouraged residents to organise local security measures, drawing lessons from the biblical shepherds who remained watchful over their flock, stressing the importance of vigilance in times of uncertainty.
On the prevailing economic challenges, Rev. Kiri acknowledged the growing hardship faced by many Nigerians, particularly in rural areas, as rising costs of essential commodities continue to stretch household incomes.
He urged Christians to live with wisdom, restraint and contentment, reminding them that faith calls for responsible living and sensitivity to the struggles of others.
The HEKAN President further explained that the season remains a reminder of God’s love, faithfulness and redemptive plan for humanity through Jesus Christ, whom he described as “the Lord our Righteous Saviour.”
He also reminded believers that persecution is part of the Christian calling, noting that even Christ faced threats from infancy, and urged them to remain steadfast, faithful and courageous.
Rev. Kiri called on Christians to reflect Christ in their conduct and promote peace, hope and righteousness in their daily lives, while expressing hope for a safer and more secure Nigeria.
