Senator Yari Honoured By African Students Union For Leadership, Service

Former Zamfara State Governor and current Senator, Abdulaziz Abubakar Yari, has been honoured with a prestigious Award in Leadership and Services by the All African Students Union (AASU), in recognition of his exemplary contributions to governance, infrastructure development, and humanitarian efforts.


The award was presented during the inauguration of the Union’s new President, Comrade Osisiogu Osikenyi, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs auditorium in Accra over the weekend. The event attracted top African leaders, diplomats, and distinguished personalities from across the continent.


Senator Yari, who also served as Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), was celebrated as an icon of modern Nigerian leadership and a mentor for young Africans. The Union highlighted his transformative initiatives in public service and commitment to improving the lives of citizens.


Presenting the award, the AASU leadership team included President Osisiogu Osikenyi of Nigeria, Deputy President Maravilha Kapaia of Angola, Vice President for North Africa Jaber Maataovi of Morocco, and Secretary General Divine Edem Kwadzodeh of Ghana.


Other recipients included President John D. Mahama of Ghana, Dr. Muhammad Ibn Chambers, Secretary General of the Pan African Women Organization (PAWO), Dr. Grace Majoro Kabayo of Uganda, and Dr. Walton E. Gilpin, Managing Director of Rokel Commercial Bank, Sierra Leone.


Senator Yari, represented by Hon. Garba Mohammed Gololo, thanked the Union for the honour, describing it as recognition not just for himself but for Nigerians contributing to Africa’s progress.


He urged African leaders to prioritize service above self-interest, stressing that true leadership lies in addressing citizens’ needs and fostering continental collaboration.

Highlighting his role as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Water Resources, Senator Yari stressed the importance of sustainable development and infrastructural projects in driving Africa’s growth.


He also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his economic reforms and security initiatives, urging other leaders on the continent to adopt similar strategies to enhance prosperity and stability.Senator Yari reaffirmed his commitment to public service and mentorship, saying Africa is blessed with leaders capable of transformative change when guided by vision and dedication.
