A Kaduna-based group, Kaduna Citizens Watch for Good Governance, has backed ongoing actions by anti-graft and security agencies against former governor of the state, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, calling for sustained investigation and prosecution

The group said the steps taken by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), and the Department of State Services (DSS) align with the long-standing demands of Kaduna residents for accountability and justice.

Addressing journalists during the protest, the chairman of the group, Comrade Victor Duniya, described the actions of the agencies as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s anti-corruption drive.

“The steps taken so far demonstrate that no individual, regardless of status, is above the law. For us, this is a response to the yearnings of ordinary Kaduna citizens who have long demanded accountability”.

Duniya recalled that the Kaduna State House of Assembly, in its June 5, 2024 ad-hoc committee report, indicted the former governor over the alleged diversion of N432 billion and money laundering.

He noted that the group had previously led protests and submitted petitions calling for investigation and prosecution, expressing satisfaction that the relevant agencies had now acted.

“We commend the EFCC and ICPC for their courage and professionalism. Their actions have strengthened public confidence in the fight against corruption”.

The group also welcomed moves by security agencies to probe the disappearance of Abubakar Dadiyata, a known critic of the former administration, describing it as a necessary step towards addressing lingering concerns.

Duniya urged the EFCC, ICPC and DSS to remain resolute and resist any form of pressure or distraction in the course of their duties.

“We are confident in the capacity of these agencies to ensure due process while pursuing justice. The people of Kaduna expect a thorough investigation, prosecution, and recovery of any misappropriated public funds”.

He stressed that sustained action by relevant institutions would strengthen accountability in public office and serve as a deterrent against abuse of power.

The group further insisted that justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done, noting that the outcome of the case would significantly shape public trust in governance and the rule of law.

Placards displayed by the protesters bore inscriptions such as: “Investigate and prosecute El-Rufai now,” “We won’t be silent until El-Rufai faces the law,” “We stand with EFCC and ICPC,” “Investigate without fear or favour,” and “Justice for victims.”
