The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has approved a one-month extension for the hosting of its Triennial Delegates Congress and inaugurated a seven-member electoral committee to conduct the association’s 2026 national elections.
The resolutions were reached during the SWAN Full Council Meeting held on Thursday, May 14, 2026, with members of the National Executive Committee (NEC), state chapter chairmen and secretaries in attendance.
According to a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting and signed by the Secretary-General of SWAN, Ikenna Okonkwo, the Council unanimously approved an appeal seeking a one-month extension for the congress.
The communiqué stated that the Triennial Delegates Congress would now hold not earlier than July and not later than August 2026.
The Council also adopted the composition of the SWAN Electoral Committee (SWANECO) for the conduct of the 2026 national elections.
SWAN President, Isaiah Benjamin, subsequently inaugurated the seven-member committee and charged members to conduct a credible, transparent, free and fair election in line with the statutes and democratic principles of the association.
The electoral committee is chaired by Hembadoon Orsar, while Jacob Onjewu Dickson serves as secretary.
Other members of the committee are Bisi Ogunleye, Bala Bawaji, Chimezie Anaso, Emmanuel Akpan and Bushrat Yusuf.
Speaking on behalf of the committee, Orsar appreciated the confidence reposed in members by the SWAN leadership and assured that the committee would deliver an election process that would uphold the integrity and standards of the association.
The Council also commended members for their continued dedication, unity and commitment to the ideals and growth of SWAN.
The communiqué drafting committee was chaired by Alfred Saiki, with Timinepre Ohia serving as member and Samuel Ahmadu as secretary.
