Former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai (rtd), has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving a new salary structure for members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, describing the move as a timely intervention that will strengthen the morale of troops.

Buratai, in a statement, said the salary increase, which takes effect from September 1, 2026, reflects the President’s commitment to improving the welfare of military personnel and recognising their sacrifices in safeguarding the country.

He noted that the approved salary adjustment provides for a 30 per cent increase for senior officers, 50 per cent for mid-level officers and 80 per cent for junior ranks.

According to the former army chief, the decision to grant the highest increment to junior personnel demonstrates strategic leadership, as it directly acknowledges soldiers on the frontlines of the fight against banditry, kidnapping and terrorism.

Buratai, who previously commanded troops in the North-East and other parts of the country, said he understood the sacrifices made daily by members of the armed forces, adding that the pay rise would boost the morale of about 250,000 personnel.

He also welcomed the Federal Government’s commitment to modernising the armed forces through the deployment of advanced technology, describing the increase in the military’s annual salary bill from N660 billion to N924 billion as a significant investment in national security.

Buratai said the development showed that the Tinubu administration recognised the importance of a well-motivated military in addressing the country’s security challenges.

He urged serving personnel to receive the gesture with gratitude and renewed commitment to professionalism, discipline and patriotism, stressing that the improved welfare package should inspire greater dedication to duty.
